I…hate…woodwork.
May 27th, 2005 by MikeCRAPP is a mini course that takes half a semester, and is bundled with another mini course, the one that I signed up for was photography.
That was cancelled because not enough students were interested in it. When we had to choose a different mini course, I decided to choose… “Creative Wood” since i needed 2 Fine Arts Credits to graduate, and was not willing to sacrifice Calculus 12 for… say… Yearbook 11. It turns out that Creative Wood is a lot worse than CRAPP, which is quite an accomplishment considering how CRAPP requires us to plan the rest of our lives at 16.
Woodwork is AWFUL. I’m given a set of pieces of wood to get to finished length, width, and thickness. Once that is done, I am given a drafting drawing. That’s it. Here is how I figure out what to do next:
I can do it by experience. I was in Woodwork 9 after all. However, in Wood 9 I sliced the end of my finger off with a Jointer. No, that’s not a typo: A FREAKING JOINTER. I’m obviously not proud of this.
I can see what other kids are doing and ask them. After all, they know what they’re doing, right? Unfortunately, I now have two big ugly holes in the back of my project from this method.
I can ask the teacher! If he was there. Which he is not. He hasn’t been there for the last week and a half, instead we have a sub that doesn’t know what we’re doing, and it seems doesn’t need to know because I’m the only one lost AND showing up.
So the entire point of Woodwork is to find out what to do through trial and error, and if you get the latter, you lose marks. I CAME TO LEARN HOW TO WOODWORK! Not to be given a project that I am expected to know, and make it, and get marks! The entire system is simply flawed.
